If you are going to be paying someone to guide you to success, and look for someone that is going to create a plan that will work for you. My mentor would tell me way back when, "there are 3 kinds of instructors":
- Teacher - The will tell you what they want you to know.Â
- Coach - They will teach you what you want to know
- Mentor - They will teach you how to do things you didn't know you could do! Â
So if you are entering into the world of wanting to hire a coach / mentor, make sure you know how to tell the difference. The first way to determine if an instructor is a Coach or a Mentor is based on who does more of the talking. When you have your initial conversation and they are so busy telling you about all the great things they have done, and all the documents they have for you to use and read, you can probably bet they have a Coaching mindset. Let me see if I can explain why I say that. Its about them getting you into their process, their way of doing things.
Now I agree that having a process is critical to success, and there is no doubt in my mind that following a process no matter who's it is, should bring you value. So they will most likely get you to do some things that you have not done before, and that's a good thing.  If you are looking for someone to take you on a journey that will take you places you didn't even know you could go, or wanted to go to... well then its a Mentor you are looking for. I hope I can share this without ticking of all the great Coaches that are out there.
A Mentor is someone that has been through the wringer and spit out the other side, they have been to hell and back, and they truly understand where it is that you are starting from.
Now here is the most important part, let me preface that with this disclaimer... the most important part "in my opinion"!
A Mentor has the ability to create a success program based entirely on you, the individual, and not a cookie cutter type model.
So dig a little deeper if you are going to be paying someone to guide you to success, and look for someone that is going to create a plan that will work for you. I know I can, and if I can do it, I know there are other great Mentors out there that can bring you the success and value you are looking for.
