One of my early speaking mentors when teaching with Bob Proctor was a man he introduced me to….Bill Gove.

Bob called Bill the “ Frank Sinatra” of public speaking. So, based on Bill’s teachings, I prepared a PowerPoint presentation to share with people who wanted to learn the speaking skills fundamentals.

So, begin with this thought: “ Speaking is easy…..you already know how to do it”.

Now, that’s a direct quote from Bill Gove and I thought that most people would disagree. For most people, as the saying goes, “ be in the box, rather than give the eulogy speech.”

Nevertheless, let’s think about the process and go through some fundamentals of what professional speakers will tell you is true:

The  Speaker’s Power Board

1> Make a point and tell a story.

Make a point, tell a story, we are performers. Now let me give you an example. Tell a story. Use personal or third party. Make it brief. Always make a point.

2> Prepare and present mini speeches.

Prepare and present mini speeches. Create a series of vignettes. When called upon, string them together to create your speech. Use humor. Always make a point.

3> Slow down.

Slow down, Do not talk too fast- 90% of people do! Pause to help slow yourself down. When a statement ends….pause.

4> Pause, scan, and nod.

Pause, scan, nod…Practice in front of a mirror. Pause, scan the audience with your entire body. Then, just nod.

5> Space.

Space….place importance on a statement by spacing…pause, then say the important part, then pause again. This will help you slow down.

6> Memorize.

Memorize vs “ wing it”. If you know what word or phrase comes next, then you can focus on technique.

7> Don’t be too perfect.

Don’t be too perfect … make your speech more conversational. Deliberately” reach” for a word. Planned spontaneity.

8> Lighten up!

Lighten up. Stop trying so hard. Use humor to lighten it up.

9> Say it, don’t read it.

Say your speech- don’t read it- planned spontaneity. Pause scan, nod.

10> Watch your body language.

Watch your body language! The total effect includes movements. Hands. Move while standing in one spot. Zig Ziglar.
