When people think of presenting, they think of large group presentations.

This is often termed "Public Speaking." Public speaking is a common fear of most people.

The scientific diagnosis for fear of public speaking is "glossophobia." It comes from the Greek words "glossa" (tongue) and "Phobos" (dread or fear). Glossophobia affects men and women equally. If you have experienced glossophobia, you're in good company. Many professional speakers feel significant fear of public speaking. Interestingly the treatment is rethinking what public speaking or presenting really is and learning and practicing presenting skills to reduce harmful anxiety and become more proficient as a presenter.

Rethinking what is presenting and learning skills are the keys to improving as a presenter."The purpose of this article is to rethink what presenting is and what makes it an essential skill for network marketers.

An nine-step guide, the nine P's, will be shared  to learn the process and practice of sharing information using effective presentations skills

Presenting in any network marketing business is the process and practice  of sharing information with groups of  1 or more people In a network marketers business, presenting is much more than large group public speaking events.

Presenting in any network marketing business is the process and practice of sharing information with groups of  1 or more people. This event could be a sales or sharing the opportunity meetings, information sessions, training, networking events, sales team meetings, small parties or demonstrations, or 1-1 sales and interviews, to name a few possibilities. These can be formal events or informal gatherings.

The point here is presenting is a significant part of a network marketing business. In this post-pandemic world, presenting possibilities have expanded tremendously. Information can be presented virtually, entirely online, hybrid, online/ in person, in-person individually or with a small group, and of course, large group.

The process and practice of presenting are essential to success, especially in network marketing. Being an effective presenter enhances those we reach and opportunities.

The essence of any network marketing business is building relationships to get things done. Relationships are built by the process and practice of effectively presenting yourself, your services, and your expertise to inform people of the services that a network marketer is as a business person and how they can be of service.

Presenting in network marketing refers to the process and practice by which a network marketer shares information that connects and engages with a wide variety of people. This group could be clients and potential clients or team members, current team members, contacts, and other community members and organizations.

Successful presenting in process and practice can increase connections, expand markets and opportunities, enhance current team members' skill sets, and positively affect current and future sales and team building. Presenting effectively expands a network marketer's visibility as they become more visible. They become, in Google terms," known, liked, and trusted."

Presenting is a learnable skill, a process that can be refined over time by continual intentional practice.

The Nine Ps present guidelines to intentionally seeking to learn and practice applicable with some accommodation in any venue or audience. The guide to developing as a presenter requires disciplined attention to these nine Ps...

1> People

It is crucial to know who your audience is and what they want. Who is your audience? Knowing your audience will guide your presentation.

If your audience is seasoned Sales members on your team, you will be presenting differently than a new group of sales team members who have just signed up and have little or no information about the business. The presenting model will change if your audience is a Rotary or Chamber group.

2> Process

What is the process of presenting?

Presenting to your sales team at your sales center will be a different process than the local church women's club

3> Purpose

What is your purpose for presenting? What is your personal purpose? What do you want to accomplish in your presentation?

What are the organizations and groups' purposes for having you present? Here are four purposes of presenting:

  • Informative
  • Demonstrative
  • Persuasive
  • Inspirational

4> Picture

What is your picture, your visualization of the completion of your talk?

Visualizing the people process and the result of your plan will provide a view of where you want to be.

A good guide is less is usually better

5> Plan

What is your plan for presenting? Draw or type out a written outline and a flexible script to achieve your picture and meet your audience's needs depending on the time. Consider a few main points well developed rather than many topics covered briefly. A good rule is one to three points and no more than 5 points based on the time and audience need.  6> Practice

Practice mentally and physically 1-3 times, depending on the presentation. In practice, try to simulate the venue and have an honest friend view the presentation to give feedback on body language, hand movements, tone, and eye contact .this, of course, will vary depending on the event. The key is to practice. Nicki Keohohou of the Direct Selling World Alliance often says that "practice doesn't make perfect. It makes it permanent." Your audience in any situation will quickly pick up, "winging its" behavior, dramatically affecting credibility.

7> Preparation

Preparation is critical to success. Check and use the venue's sound, lights, technology, and temperature. Being in working order is critical. This is why it is wise to arrive before the audience to check everything and maybe practice a few lines. It is always better to catch possible glitches before presenting. Preparation will undoubtedly vary depending on the place, the audience, and the unknown. Being prepared reduces anxiety and allows you to be agile and change something

8> Presence and participation in a presentation to connect

Presenting in network marketing is about sharing information, connecting, and engaging those you are talking with to meet their needs, not yours.

Presenting is about adding value to your audience of 1 or 100 people it is not about showing off your expertise.

Presenting is adding value to the audience by sharing your expertise. Before I start any presentation, I write on a 3X5 Card "it is NOT about you!!" and place it where I can see it all the time.

Presence means being fully present to your audience and demonstrating connection through body language, movement, and hand motions. It also means using your eyes and senses to notice engagement in the eyes and body language of the audience. Please note these same ideas are necessary and require more focus in virtual or hybrid presenting. The intentional spacing of activity and questions and checking for clarity are crucial to maintaining attention and engagement.

If this is a longer  40-60 plus-minute talk, use breaks, even if impromptu. Finally, respect and honor your audience's time. My students remember the times  I went over more than the times I ended early.

Finally, depending on the type of presentation, leave time to summarize and answer questions and reflect on the information shared. Always thank your audience. They gave you their time and attention. This means a lot in a busy world.

9> Persistence in reflecting on and learning from presenting

Reflection provides the presenter with time to review the presentation. A few simple reflection questions

  • What did I like?
  • What didn't I like?
  • What can I do differently next time?

A routine of reflecting, no matter the activity of presenting, allows a time to confirm what you did, learn from what didn't go well, and plan to change next time.

Presenting is an essential network marketing skill that can be learned and refined. It is a skill that can be applied across all possible information-sharing venues that are increasingly available today.

The 9 Ps are a guideline to refine network marketers' presenting skills in any situation. They are constant guides to practice presenting in any setting, platform, or venue.

These skills can be modeled and taught to a team or any other group. It is hard, intentional work that will help move you from nervous to excited to share your expertise with those you serve.

They will know, like, and trust you to enhance your network marketing success.
